Ok, I've posted this thread on rubyobrails.org. I hope none of you mind. 
If you do, feel free to edit/remove your sections.

Nick, thank you very much for that response. Obviously it takes time to 
try and adopt one or more of these approaches but I have a much clearer 
idea of how I'd like to proceed. I wouln't be surprised to find many 
developpers who would benefit from reading your response.
