I've installed MAMP and Locomotive on my brand new mac to resume work on in RoR. But I'm getting error messages right off the bat. The rails command worked, but the generate command and the require command didn't. I got this error message: ./script/../config/boot.rb:18:in `require': No such file to load -- rubygems (LoadError) from ./script/../config/boot.rb:18 from script/generate:2:in `require' from script/generate:2 It is my understanding from a google search that I need to install gems or go about another ruby installation (but the point of locomotive was to avoid that). However, after I downloaded the gems I did not know how to install them and there were no instructions. The other ruby installations are all complex and keep making reference to usr/local, which I don't get. Any help would be appreciated. I got a new app. Nothing makes any difference. The only thing that's changed on my computer since yesterday is downloading the new iTunes. I'm on a MacBookPro running 10.4.10. Hi Ryan, Good to hear from you. Can you maybe add a "verbose" mode, where it logs what it's doing during startup? If so we might get an idea of where it's getting stuck. And thanks for making Locomotive. It's saved me an enormous amount of time. George -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If it is not installed under / Applications, for instance, if I try to put it in /Users/lori/ Applications, it won't work. The problem is the environment: lori@draco /Applications/Locomotive2/Bundles/ rmagickRailsMar2007_ppc.locobundle/framework/bin $ ./ruby -e 'puts $:' /Applications/Locomotive2/Bundles/rmagickRailsMar2007_ppc.locobundle/ framework/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8 /Applications/Locomotive2/Bundles/rmagickRailsMar2007_ppc.locobundle/ framework/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin8.9.0 /Applications/Locomotive2/Bundles/rmagickRailsMar2007_ppc.locobundle/ framework/lib/ruby/site_ruby /Applications/Locomotive2/Bundles/rmagickRailsMar2007_ppc.locobundle/ framework/lib/ruby/1.8 /Applications/Locomotive2/Bundles/rmagickRailsMar2007_ppc.locobundle/ framework/lib/ruby/1.8/powerpc-darwin8.9.0 If I move Locomotive, I still get the same output from this command. Also, if I try to create a new bundle, and give it a new name, I have a similar problem. Anyway, my suggestions would include: 1. Only install Locomotive to /Applications 2. Even if you customize a bundle, do not rename it. I actually worked out the beginnings of a plan to get around this, but it was a lot more effort than I had time for... thus, at least some, if not all, functionality requires Locomotive to be in /Applications. (Well, requires the bundles to be in /Applications/Locomotive2 - I don't think it matters where Locomotive.app is). -r > ../Dave > _______________________________________________ > Locomotive-users mailing list > Locomotive-users@lists.raaum.org > http://lists.raaum.org/mailman/listinfo/locomotive-users > From paul.welty at gmail.com Thu Sep 6 16:48:27 2007 From: paul.welty at gmail.com (Paul Welty) Date: Thu Sep 6 22:27:41 2007 Subject: [Locomotive-users] can't start locomotive anymore In-Reply-To: <83E247FF-BDB7-4944-B1C0-B5ECF613C751@gmail.com> References: <0360056E-9930-4569-991D-DA90F5A1E3DA@paulwelty.com> <83E247FF-BDB7-4944-B1C0-B5ECF613C751@gmail.com> Message-ID: <5986A6EB-F2A0-4CBB-8660-FB796EEF36E5@gmail.com> On Sep 6, 2007, at 12:08 PM, George Bailey wrote: > > On Sep 6, 2007, at 9:42 AM, Paul Welty wrote: > >> Any ideas? >> > > > None here. After about 30 minutes, Locomotive finally showed its "console" window. I then re-added my project (since I had deleted prefs). That also took a long time---about 10 minutes. I wanted to change the port, so I changed 3000 to 3004, and that took about 5 minutes before Loco became responsive again. After hitting "Add", it took another 10 minutes to get back to the "console". Once there, it all seems to work ok. The app started and runs fine (I think). So, I guess it's sort of working, but these delays obviously aren't very fun. Maybe Ryan's just too busy to work on the app. It is a lot of aowkr, so that wouldn't surprise me, but I don't really know his plans for it. -Paul -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I don't change the short cut, but I do use BBEdit. Here's how you can apply my method to any editor: 1) In Locomotive, configure your preferences to zsh/bash or tcsh as required 2) Right-click the project and select "Open in Terminal" 3) use the command line tool of your choice! In my case, I use "bbedit" from the command line to open files in the BBEdit application. If you are particularly hampered by budget constraints, I highly recommend Bare Bones Software's "TextWrangler": http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/ - it's free-as-in- beer, and is basically BBEdit with a few features missing. The fancy things that BBEdit does but TextWrangler doesn't: - HTML palette for dead-easy HTML editing - Disk browser - code folding - text clipping system - integrated Subversion/CVS support (with TextWrangler, you'll have to use the editor to edit, and the command line svn/git tools to do source code management) - Automator integration - support for ctags (so you can right-click a method name to locate the definition of that method) And while I'm recommending tools, I'll take the opportunity to remind you that no self-respecting programmer touches a line of code before having a version control system in place! I'd just like the same convenience as TextMate, that's all. Then, when trying to do the same with rails, it was not found. In a search for a fix, I found a post online which suggested having textmate open rails from within it so I tried this and Voila! my rails appeared to install, BUT it installed in the wrong place. I need to move my whole rails install into the correct folder and it is not letting me do that via the cp command in terminal. Every time I try to do a cp and paste in the old location to modify it, terminal starts running code before I even hit the "enter" button. I would like to just start over. So far, I have not installed gems. Is it advisable to try to move the Locomotive app and folders to the trash and run the install again? There is a default ruby, which is incompatible with Rails, installed by default on Mac OS X under /user/bin. If you just open a terminal, this is what you get. If you type "which ruby" from the terminal it will tell you where it found ruby. You need to start Locomotive, configure a Rails application, and then open a terminal for that app FROM Locomotive. Then you will be using the Locomotive bundle ruby/rails. In that terminal, if you type "which ruby" you will see the path to the Locomotive bundle version of ruby. And the "rails" command will also be available. > > In a search for a fix, I found a post online which suggested having > textmate open rails from within it so I tried this and Voila! my > rails appeared to install, BUT it installed in the wrong place. > I need to move my whole rails install into the correct folder and > it is not letting me do that via the cp command in terminal. Just make sure you only copy up to the last character, and not the line-feed as well. When you paste the line-feed, the terminal interprets that as you pressing "Enter". > Also, if mysql is already on my computer, do I need to reinstall > that after the RoR reinstall? No, you won't need to reinstall MySQL. The most you will need to do is the usual database drop/create. Just an extra note - when launching TextMate or Terminal from Locomotive, I've found it works much better if you "Start" the Rails application from within Locomotive first. The Terminal window that Locomotive opens should have some text automatically pasted in, along the lines of "source /private/var/tmp/ folders.501/TemporaryItems/88D7A..." If you don't open Terminal from a running Locomotive application, you'll get the Ruby that ships with Mac OS X 10.4.10: > % ruby -v > ruby 1.8.2 (2004-12-25) [universal-darwin8.0] The Ruby that ships with Locomotive (I think this is the March bundle): > % ruby -v > ruby 1.8.6 (2007-03-13 patchlevel 0) [i686-darwin8.9.1] Hope this helps Alex From holly at hollyfortenberry.com Fri Sep 21 00:41:17 2007 From: holly at hollyfortenberry.com (Holly Fortenberry) Date: Fri Sep 21 00:38:20 2007 Subject: [Locomotive-users] can I uninstall/reinstall? Below is what I have done. I am trying not to leave out any steps (I used to work in tech support for a software company so I understand to give as much info and be as literal as possible). As you suggested, I typed "which ruby" and got the following (which looks to be the right version but wrong location). ------- Last login: Thu Sep 20 05:36:30 on ttyp1 Welcome to Darwin! -bash: cd: /Users/hollyfortenberry/Pictures/myphotos: No such file or directory holly-fortenberrys-computer:~ hollyfortenberry$ which ruby /Volumes/Locomotive2/Locomotive2/Bundles/standardRailsMar2007.locobundle/i386/bin/ruby holly-fortenberrys-computer:~ hollyfortenberry$ ------ Please note that my shell seems to be in my Pictures folder, I think. The reason it does this is because, immediately after I installed Locomotive, i followed a tip at http://aralbalkan.com/758. The tip suggested I create an application and open Terminal to change the location. So, I did the following steps in that vein: 1 - open brand new Locomotive 2 - applications - create new 3 - typed in a name for a new app that I wanted to create (called Pictures) and typed in the folder location. Then, somehow, from that, rails seems to have installed itself in that location. If you wouldn't mind looking at that tip, you will see what I mean. Now, when I type "ruby", my terminal just sits there (maybe it is running??). I didn't realize you can run ruby from locomotive. I haven't gotten that far yet. I thought I should try to get a good install before getting too far into how to use the apps so I don't compound any issues. So far, ALL I have done is: 1 - install Locomotive 2 - typed ruby in Terminal and found it (version 1.8.1 I think) 3 - typed rails and did not find it 4 - implemented the tip at http://aralbalkan.com/758 5 - and now what you have suggested by checking which ruby Now, when I type "ruby ~v", I get the following error in Terminal: _______ Last login: Thu Sep 20 17:08:31 on ttyp1 Welcome to Darwin! -bash: cd: /Users/hollyfortenberry/Pictures/myphotos: No such file or directory holly-fortenberrys-computer:~ hollyfortenberry$ ruby ~v ruby: No such file or directory -- ~v (LoadError) holly-fortenberrys-computer:~ hollyfortenberry$ ruby ~v ruby: No such file or directory -- ~v (LoadError) holly-fortenberrys-computer:~ hollyfortenberry$ _____ Finally, in response to your suggestion that I am using the wrong Ruby, I think I am too. When I do as you suggested and try to open Terminal from within my Locomotive, I receive a Locomotive error warning me that if I continue, I may be using the wrong Ruby and my app may not work properly. In addition, the shell results above suggest that neither ruby is available. I am afraid to do too much and compound any problem. Is it not a good idea for me to just do an uninstall/reinstall? thank you, Holly Lori M Olson wrote: > > On 20-Sep-07, at 7:22 AM, Holly Fortenberry wrote: > >> Hi, >> >> I just installed Locomotive on my mac os x. Changes to the view is instant. That's what I would expect - the built-in web server is loading the Ruby modules on demand, but only parsing the HTML as it's sending the output to the client. Once the Ruby modules are loaded, they're stuck in memory. I think you can get away with "require_dependency" instead of "require" in some places, but there is a lot of stuff in Rails that is autoloaded which you have no control over. > Another problem is with a view: ... > Output: (Not interpret as html by the browser) Why? What other HTML is around it? Have you run the complete output through an HTML validator? I wonder if you've somehow got the output into plain text mode instead of sending text/html.
