From phil.grimm at gmail.com Mon Oct 2 21:35:27 2006 From: phil.grimm at gmail.com (Phil Grimm) Date: Mon Oct 2 21:35:35 2006 Subject: [Locomotive-users] Too many ruby installs on OSX Tiger Message-ID: <8be2c9c0610021435p54c13bbbpaf45a18dd1953de9@mail.gmail.com> Hey folks, Recent mac convert here... trying to get setup for Rails dev on OSX Tiger. It looks like Locomotive is the environment to get on with. The problem I'm running into is that I now have like 3 installs of ruby: 1) The 1.8.2 ruby that comes preinstalled with Tiger 2) Locomotive-embedded ruby 3) DarwinPorts-installed ruby (I installed this thinking I could uninstall it to get rid of the old Tiger ruby :) I should be able to uninstall the "ports" ruby easy enough, just not sure if I should at this point. After installing Locomotive, I was trying to get the PATH and MANPATH stuff working with the Locomotive ruby (and ignoring the Tiger ruby files), but never could get man to ignore the old ruby man pages and pick up the new ones under Locomotive. I searched and couldn't find a (sane) way to uninstall the old (Tiger) ruby. I supposed you could just start deleting files manually, but that sounds risky. Do you leave it there and hope it doesn't get in the way? What are you all doing? Is there a prescription for this? At least that?s what I did/do, and it all seems to work well. -Paul On 10/2/06 5:35 PM, "Phil Grimm" wrote: > Hey folks, > Recent mac convert here... trying to get setup for Rails dev on OSX Tiger. > > It looks like Locomotive is the environment to get on with. > The problem I'm running into is that I now have like 3 installs of ruby: > > 1) The 1.8.2 ruby that comes preinstalled with Tiger > 2) Locomotive-embedded ruby > 3) DarwinPorts-installed ruby (I installed this thinking I could uninstall it > to get rid of the old Tiger ruby :) > > I should be able to uninstall the "ports" ruby easy enough, just not sure if I > should at this point. > After installing Locomotive, I was trying to get the PATH and MANPATH stuff > working with the > Locomotive ruby (and ignoring the Tiger ruby files), but never could get man > to ignore the > old ruby man pages and pick up the new ones under Locomotive. > > I searched and couldn't find a (sane) way to uninstall the old (Tiger) ruby. > I supposed you could just start deleting files manually, but that sounds > risky. > Do you leave it there and hope it doesn't get in the way? > > What are you all doing? > Is there a prescription for this? > > Thanks, > Phil > > > > _______________________________________________ > Locomotive-users mailing list > Locomotive-users@lists.raaum.org > http://lists.raaum.org/mailman/listinfo/locomotive-users -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Unfortunately this followed a number of changes to my system: 1. Removing /usr/bin/ruby et al. to reflect use of self-compiled /usr/local/bin/ruby, which is in the path and does respond to /usr/bin/env ruby 2. Installing Apache2 alongside Mac OS X default Apache to power a subversion server. The crash log is below. If you have any insight it would be much appreciated. I have tried turning off the Apache2 service but that doesn't help. So, Locomotive uses some ruby scripts to initialize this-and-that in the bundles and there is no longer a ruby in the standard Application environment, thus crashing. (Removing the system ruby _will_ cause you more problems than it will solve. Beyond Locomotive, any Apple software updates that affect their ruby will expect it to be there and will either crash or replace it...). In any case, either: 1. symlink /usr/bin/ruby to /usr/local/bin/ruby 2. modify .MacOSX/environment.plist (google it) to add /usr/local/bin to the Application environment Best, -r 2. I can't see a single valid reason to why you should un-install the 'ports' version, unless of course you'd want to compile your own version. So don't ;-) > After installing Locomotive, I was trying to get the PATH and > MANPATH stuff working with the > Locomotive ruby (and ignoring the Tiger ruby files), but never > could get man to ignore the > old ruby man pages and pick up the new ones under Locomotive. Not 100% sure I fully understand you there, but AFAIK Locomotive opens up a new Terminal window with all the correct PATHs set if opened from within Locomotive. $ echo $PATH /Users/mats/Applications/Locomotive2/Bundles/ rails112rmagick_ppc.locobundle/framework/bin:/Users/mats/Applications/ Locomotive2/Bundles/rails112rmagick_ppc.locobundle/framework/sbin:/ usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/Users/mats/bin: $ which ruby /Users/mats/Applications/Locomotive2/Bundles/ rails112rmagick_ppc.locobundle/framework/bin/ruby in normal Terminal window: $ which ruby /usr/local/bin/ruby So based on what you're working with, you'll get the correct ruby. As for MANPATH, well, neither of those produces any output on my system, and AFAIK the Locomotive bundles does not seem to contain man pages. > I searched and couldn't find a (sane) way to uninstall the old > (Tiger) ruby. > I supposed you could just start deleting files manually, but that > sounds risky. > Do you leave it there and hope it doesn't get in the way? It can only 'get in the way' IF you don't have the correct PATH set in .bash_login or .bash_profile, so make sure your $PATH is something like: export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:$PATH" Make sure your path to ruby is in the front of the PATH variable, before Apple's Ruby install. > What are you all doing? > Is there a prescription for this? It really is the best tool for MySQL development. Everything else seems like a clunky java app. I dunno why so many people love CocoaMySQL. I've had problems/bugs in the past using it. Specifically it has problems with changing the table definitions. But maybe it's because I'm using MySQL 5. Plus it doesn't support views or functions. Navicat also has a universal binary for Mac and supports version 5. if you are using mySQL 5 then you can create views and functions. It's a commercial product but it's a nominal price. For Oracle development I use Oracles own SQLDeveloper. It's a free tool that runs on any platform. Supports some key features that most DB tools, at least the ones on Mac OSX, seem to miss. Things like support for materialized views, views, PL/SQL development, etc. Still not as nice as say Toad on Windows but it's the best for the Mac that I've seen. - phill On Oct 3, 2006, at 9:54 AM, Mark Phillips wrote: > I am looking (again) at tools that aid the development of database > intensive applications. You need to install the "locomotive" command line tool (which you can do from the Help menu in Locomotive). Once you've done that, login to your shell, navigate to the root of your rails app, and execute `locomotive bash-environment` (the back-ticks are part of the command). This will configure your current shell. I installed the instant client before I ever installed locomotive, so it wasn't in my locobundle. Not sure if that makes a difference. Make certain that sqlplus from the Instant client is working before attempting to do anything else. If sqlplus doesn't work, then nothing else will. From our internal development wiki, I have these notes on installing the instant client: Add the instantclient directory to your PATH. Add the instantclient directory to DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH Create an environment variable called SQLPATH and point it at the instant client directory If you want to use tnsnames.ora then: create a tnsnames.ora or get a copy of one place it in your home directory Create an environment variable called TNS_ADMIN, and point it at your home directory At this point, you should be able to use sqlplus, and connect to any database in your tnsnames.ora file Ok, now on to OCI8. You are installing an old version. ruby- oci8-0.1.13.tar.gz. There were serious Rails problems with older versions. I recommend that you download the most recent release - 0.1.16. sudo ruby setup.rb config -- --with-instant-client= Try this, and see if it works. (Also, for the approach you're taking, try RUBYLIB instead of LOAD_PATH, but you will need several more directories - run "env" from a Locomotive opened terminal to see what else is set.) I would like to ditch the use of the client app and build a system preference panel to do the same job (also help keep the desktop clean and improve the at boot loading abilities). I am wondering if there is anywhere I can look to see what the current client is doing so I can keep things consist ant with the Locomotive core and/or if there is anything that I need to worry about in using the bundles.
